Length: approx. 400 miles
Lanes: Four for most of route, six in Binghamton area.
Access: Alternates between limited access and at-grade highway.
Misc: Route 17 is called the Quickway. The current Route 17 was built around 1957-1960 to replace the old road, now called Old Route 17. Route 17M is also called Old Route 17. It runs in Orange County roughly parallel to NY 17. Old Route 17 northwest of Orange County does not have a state road designation. However, 17M continues northwest into Sullivan County Rt. 171 through 179A (called Sullivan Ave./St. at various parts). It was the old road before a superhighway was built just next to it to accomodate summer 'Borscht Belt' traffic in the Catskills. (AE)

History: Apparently NY 18 used to extend further east; my guess is Latta Road to Stutson St. bridge to Pattonwood Dr. to Lake Shore Blvd. to present NY 590 to Lake Rd., ending at either NY 250 or (less likely) NY 21 in Pultneyville. Little Green Signs for NY 18 still exist on NY 590 north of Ridge Rd., and on Lake Rd. west of NY 250. Lake Rd. bridge over Irondequoit Bay outlet has since been removed (grrr). (NP)
