KML files contains 3D geospatial data.  They can be opened with Google Earth.  With these files you can see the route of an individual road displayed on a 3D map of the earth. The files were generated from NYSDOT GIS SHP files.  State Routes (including 9xx series routes), US Routes, Interstate Routes, and County Routes each have their own file.  State Routes are shown in green, US Routes in red, County Routes in orange, and Interstates in blue. County files contain all four types of roads for the routes that pass through the county. Some counties (like Nassau) do not sign their roads and are not included as the data source did not contain information for them. Many segments are missing.  This is due to either a lack of information in the SHP files provided by NYSDOT or route multiplexing (see NY 5 and US 20 for an example.  Sections of NY 5 are "missing", but they are covered on US 20's route.)
